Adelaide Trombetta, soprano
A sparkling seasonal tradition returns as the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra brings the unmistakable sound of the holidays to the Anne and Ellen Fife Theatre. Join the orchestra, the chorus, and special guest soloist Adelaide Trombetta for one of the most magical and cherished concerts of the season.
From jubilant orchestral showpieces to beloved carols and holiday favorites, this festive program offers nostalgia with bright musical flair. Bring family, bring friends, and come ready to take part. With joyful sing-alongs and plenty of chances to join in, Holiday Pops invites audiences of all ages to take part in the celebration.
Warm, exuberant, and full of musical cheer, this annual gathering is less a concert than a shared embrace of the season.
A graduate of Yale’s prestigious Opera Program, Adelaide Trombetta made her debut on the Metropolitan Opera stage when she was 21 as a national finalist in the renowned Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. Since then, the soprano has rapidly gained recognition as a world-class singer and a compelling stage performer, enjoying leading concert and stage engagements throughout the United States and Europe.
Her most notable roles include Musetta in La Bohème, Euridice in Orphée aux enfers, Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus, and Konstanze in Die Entführung aus dem Serail. Abroad, she has enjoyed repeated seasons with the Orchestra Giuseppe Verdi of Milan and Das Verein Opera of Zurich. Additionally, she performed while modeling a Gianfranco Ferré designer gown for TaoModa, one of the largest fashion shows in Italy.
Equally comfortable on the concert stage, Trombetta is a regular featured soloist with symphony orchestras and has received critical acclaim for her renditions of Orff’s Carmina Burana, Fauré’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s Creation, and Mozart’s Great Mass in C minor, among others. In 2018 she made her Carnegie Hall debut in Weill Recital Hall singing Bachianas Brasileiras no. 5 with guitarist David Veslocki.
She is also a skilled dancer and has performed several crossover concerts allowing her to showcase her lesser-known talent, featuring tap, ballroom, and ballet. Trombetta is assistant professor of voice and opera at Liberty University and resides in Lynchburg, Virginia, with her husband and their two daughters.
Maestro David Stewart Wiley has conducted leading orchestras across the United States — including Atlanta, Buffalo, Cincinnati, San Francisco, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, Minnesota, St. Louis, Oregon, Hawaii, and Utah — and has appeared in dozens of countries throughout Asia, Africa, and Europe. This past May he returned to guest conduct the Boston Pops in historic Symphony Hall, having made his triple debut with the Boston Pops as conductor, composer, and piano soloist a few years ago. Wiley continues to conduct regularly in New York, and also appears throughout the U.S. as pianist, composer, and conductor.
Wiley enjoys a multi-faceted career as an orchestra builder, guest conductor, arranger, educator, and chamber music collaborator, and inspires and engages both orchestras and audiences. Under his direction since 1996, the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra has experienced continued artistic growth, program innovation and expansion, and increased financial stability. His tenure with the orchestra features stellar reviews, a diverse list of guest artists and composers, and innovative commissions of new music. Wiley is an active community partner, having been named Roanoke’s “Citizen of the Year” for his outstanding service and outreach.
As a solo pianist with diverse classical, pops, and chamber music experience, Wiley has performed with numerous orchestras in the United States, including Boston, Minnesota, Indianapolis, Oregon, Honolulu, Wheeling, and West Virginia, and in China, Russia, Romania, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Czech Republic, and Bulgaria. Opera and ballet performances include the Aspen Opera Theater, IU Opera Theater, and the Moscow Ballet. Wiley plans and facilitates an innovative experience with business executives and musicians together on stage, titled Conducting Change, which helps executives to model leadership skills in a fun and engaging atmosphere with a live orchestra.
Festival engagements included the Aspen Music Festival, Brevard Music Center, Garth Newel, Wintergreen, Park City (Utah), Minnesota Orchestra Summerfest, Sitka (Alaska) and Prince Albert (Hawaii) summer music festivals. From 1999 until 2006 Wiley was the Artistic Director and Conductor of the Wintergreen Summer Music Festival, where he founded and built the festival orchestra, created the student academy, and led the festival to remarkable artistic growth in seven years, tripling the balanced budget. He continues as Artistic Director of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Music Festival in Floyd.
The Roanoke Symphony Orchestra has performed annually at the center since our opening in 2013.
